The Documentary Competition consists of twelve rounds of open submissions, plus a Wild Card round and one Final round of follow-up films. Members upload 30- to 180-second-long films to enter. Voting is always open on the Documentary Competition and any member can cast a "love it" or "leave it" ballot for any film in the current round of submissions. At the close of each round, Filmaka selects two winners for that Doc round.

After all rounds of open competition are complete, the Doc Finalists submit a second film on the same topic as their previous winning doc submission and make a pitch for the full-length version of the documentary they would like to direct. One winner is chosen to have their film produced by Filmaka.
