Good concept for this theme! I really didn't realize it was that bad. It is still very bad even for heterosexual women, like me. My entry doesn't have anything to do with that, concept, but lease watch it, 'Deadline'.
Good message at the right time. Keep working the concept.
Point well made. Good film also for Gay/Lesbian Film Fests. Please check out "The Sands of Time"
Great film. Actors were natural and have a good presence. Some of the phrases were improvised? Theme would propably work better in a longer film... (just wondering, not meant to be any minus for this flm).
I've enjoyed your films. "Wake Up" is unbelievable!! Good luck!
Good actors and story development. But When he was being chase under the bridge, where did the guy with the gray T shirt come from? Why did he help the other guy to beat him up?. Good short.
I disagree with a sentence that it is a good development of a story. Because we build a suspense also we need to see some development of his fear. I mean guy is stalking him and next shot he is running into dead end to ask a stranger (non-English) for help. If you want credibility you need to build his fear and his struggle to escape a guy far more subtle. Otherwise you got this propaganda material and not a film. Good luck!
Jardiel, the other guy under the bridge is the man's gay bashing associate. The two have essentially set a trap to attack a gay man. Originally, the buildup was longer, but I had to get it to under 3 minutes, so I was forced to cut a couple of shots. I was hoping that it would still translate. The important piece to me was the act of brutality, not so much the man's fear leading up to the brutality. Though I just heard that films could be 3:20, which if is true, angers me, because I have always made compromises to get my films at the 3:00 meark. Srdan, I am much more satisfied with my 'propaganda' than if I had submitted a mish-mash of unenlightened nonsnese like 'Faces'
brave film!!!
brave film mate...a very good topic as well..and the act of brutality sums it up in the end with the poster..u should be well proud of this film and try screening it to various film fests as well
Very interesting story. You managed to say a lot in a small time.
amazing actors in a politically charged emotional piece of work. well done with a tough subject.
I really like the ending of the guy wiping the blood off of his face. It is a great way of showing your message instead of telling it. I thought a few more solid punches shown (similar to the first) would have added a more brutal effect... but its very minor. Great film on an important issue, especially over here in California.
End shot of bloody hand-print on flyer: exactly, it is not somebody else's problem. I was affected by the trap and beating, it made me uncomfortable and upset, which means you have done your job well! All I kept thinking was, no, no, that can't happen in Central Park! I too have always conformed to a strict 3 minutes in the past -- to some great frustration sometimes. But I don't feel that you lose anything in that transition to under the bridge, since it is a set-up by the two assailants.
Very good topic and script however the initial part of the fight scene was clearly fake and lost a lot of the dramatic effect for this film. (watch his first punch) Also the Font of the title is very naff and the sound should fade out slowly at the start instead of just stopping quickly. work on these bits then i think put it in the festival circuit! thanks 4 ur comments on mine. its just my random holiday shots LOL! xxxxx
a really well made film. good shots, strong message. nice work.
This is a very good, well-paced piece n i dont think you needed extra 20 secs had u been given it. The beating was pretty intense.. reminded me of bits from 'Milk'. Keep it going.
I was more distracted by the story concept than the execution. The emphasis on GAY RIGHTS is really not the issue. The guy being beaten up really isn't going to be solved by Gay Rights. Protection from Assault is already a Human Right, and already a Criminal Office. The issue is stupid, prejudiced, bigoted people who are intolerant of people with difference. This could just as well have been racial, age, gender or disability. The rights already exist equally for all (I hope!) but laws and rights don't stop idiots from being idiots :( Execution of the story is pretty good :)
Alle, thanks for raising this point. I agree with you that, this kind of bigoted attack could take place regardless of whatever laws exist on the books. Though there is still a fundamental problem. And the man in the film raises it, he says "If we don't change things now, than people will continue to treat us as inferior and in the eyes of the law, they will be completely justified.' And that is the problem. Since gays don't have equal rights, they are in an inferior position in our society. And as such, the mass of society looks down upon them. Look at history. When women did not have equal rights, it was common practice to keep them subjugated. When blacks did not have equal rights, almost the entire south treated them poorly. Once these groups were granted equal rights (by laws) their status began to improve throughout all walks of society. It took time, and it still is not an absolute, but the granting of equal rights was that first stepping stone. Sure, dumb ignorant people continue to treat Women, blacks, and gays poorly. But the first two groups are in a much better position with the masses, then they were when they did not have the same legal rights. So I argue that it is absolutely necessary to grant all people equal rights regardless of color, creed, sexual orientation, etc. And once Gay's are given equal rights, they will become more accepted by the masses. And these acts of violence will decrease. Probably not disappear, but certainly improve. Thanks for raising the issue. And now go demand that Gays are given Equal Rights!
To be honest, I don't complety agree with the way that you develop the subject of homophobia and equel rights. But your film, brillantely written, directed and performed, opened a very strong debate, ask some very delicate question, and for that deserve every award of the world.
You've made me do some research around the USA and I'm in shock. Proposition 8, NO H8, Racism bit against Black but White - what on earth is going on? Have we been so bold as humans to go full cycle? Ok on the film itself other than my previous comments about execution of the story, it could be rounded off better and production quality is a bit low but it's haunting me. So I've made my mark. Chris, I'm looking for people to work on a NO H8 film - interested? We have a few weeks :)
