Coming from a Portuguese/Finnish background, Simão has lived and worked as an actor and director in theatre and cinema in Lisbon, Luxembourg and London.
After completing his B.A. in Drama and Theatre Arts at Goldsmiths University in London in 2003 he took a Performance-Art course with the British company Third Angel and has since been working in theatre and video at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. As an actor in film he has worked with directors such as Roberto Faenza and Werner Schroeter. He plays classical piano and is a graphic design enthusiast, having designed logos for magazines and exhibitions in Portugal.
It was in 2007 through the FILMAKA competition that Simão, a lover and maker of films from a young age, had the chance to work as a film director in projects also written by him with total creative freedom to explore his talent.
He admires Kubrick, Hitchcock, Scorcese, Tarkovsky, PT Anderson and Charlie Kaufman. Simão shares his views on filmmaking with one of his greatest creative influences, Mr. David Lynch, in that he finds cinema the perfect medium for the weaving together of different art forms.
In September 2008 Simão will begin his MFA in FIlm at Columbia University, New York.
